Swinging Bridge Fire Evacuations Through Noon Monday

September 6, 2020 by Jackson Hole Radio

A wildfire that broke out Sunday evening forced residents in several subdivisions to evacuate their homes. The blaze, dubbed the Swinging Bridge Fire, prompted an immediate evacuation order at 5:50 PM for Henry’s Road, Squaw Creek, Porcupine Creek, and Game Creek neighborhoods. That order remains in effect until at least noon on Monday.
Officials in Teton County use a “Ready-Set-Go” format to announce evacuations but due to the rapid onset of the fire, authorities immediately gave the GO order.
A staging area for evacuees was set up at the Munger Mountain Elementary School parking lot where the Red Cross is provided assistance.
The Teton County Animal shelter iopened and Jackson residents are making paddock and pasture space available for horses. Residents are asked to call 733-2331 for assistance.
Firefighters dropped fences to allow horses to move away from the fire.
Air support was provided by two helicopters and a slurry bomber that flew over the fire until darkness fell and fire crews have been using heavy equipment to protect structures and battle the fire.
Motorists are asked to avoid the area on South Highway 89 if possible and be alert for emergency vehicles, and fleeing wildlife or livestock.
Fire danger has be very high in the area and the National weather service issued a “Red Flag Warning’ for Western Wyoming Sunday indicating low humidity, warm temperatures, and gusty winds created a dangerous combination that could cause fires to quickly flare up.
Weather will work in the firefighters favor as we head into Labor Day as a strong cold front is forecast to bring rain and snow to the valley Monday afternoon and night.
