The Links at Teton Peaks has announced a charity golf tournament and community barbeque, “Tee-Off for Transplant,” for the Children’s Organ Transplant Association to assist a 13-year-old boy from Teton Valley who is in need of life-saving kidney transplants. This event will raise money to assist with a lifetime of transplant-related expenses for him. Raith Wehner’s latest medical journey began nearly two years ago with sporadic yet severe bouts of joint pain. As his condition worsened, he was taken to Children’s Primary Hospital in Salt Lake City. It was there he was diagnosed with Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (or GPA), formerly known as Weggoner’s Disease. GPA is a rare autoimmune disorder that usually manifests in adults. During his two-week stay at Children’s Primary Hospital he received intravenous infusions of a drug discovered in recent years to effectively treat GPA, and also received two blood transfusions. In August he was readmitted to Children’s Primary Hospital where he was diagnosed with Stage 5 Renal Failure as a result of the disease. While he is about to have a kidney donated by his parents, a donated kidney does not last a lifetime. Instead, donated kidneys last on average only 8-15 years. This means that Raith will likely need multiple kidney transplants over the course of his lifetime. Raithjust finished 8thgrade at the Journey’s School in Jackson. He is a kind and fun-loving 13-year-old boy who loves playing baseball, snowboarding and playing video games like many other boys his age. The September 14thevent hopes to raise money to help with the expenses Raith will face.
