Teton County Enters Partial Fire Restriction

August 25, 2020 by Jackson Hole Radio

At the request of Jackson Hole Fire/EMS Chief Brady Hansen, The Teton County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously to enter a partial fire restriction for Teton County, Wyoming.
The partial fire restrictions prohibit open fires in commercial, private, and recreational activities in the unincorporated area of Teton County until further notice.
A number of factors were taken into consideration by Chief Hansen, including the predicted fire potential, the number of regional fire starts, the condition of fuels, available firefighting resources, predicted human activity, weather forecast, and the status of partner agencies and lands.
Battalion Chief Fire Marshal Kathy Clay supports the county-wide ban, noting dry valley floor grasses are extremely susceptible to ignition sources right now.
“We need to eliminate any chances of human-caused ignitions,” said Clay. “The afternoon lightning storms are challenging our local resources and, of course, the national resources are very limited considering all of the other fires in the nation.”
The past two weeks have been warm and dry throughout Western Wyoming. Dead and down fuels have dried considerably, and live fuels, such as sage and grass, have cured at lower elevations and can carry fire very quickly, allowing for rapid fire spread. The long-term forecast is predicted to be hot and dry, producing a high fire danger.
The partial fire restriction will remain in effect until further notice when conditions change.
