The Teton County, Idaho Sheriff’s Department reports that it has had numerous reports of school bus violations with motorists passing when the stop arm is extended and the going around or past the school bus while the red lights are flashing. Not only is this a misdemeanor citation for the driver that doesn’t obey the stop arm law, it also is an extreme hazard for the children.
Buses will display flashing amber lights when they are preparing to stop giving motorists ample time to prepare for the stop that will follow.
The time spent waiting for the bus to safely load and depart with school children is going to be much less than the time that would be spent either in court with a misdemeanor, or far worse.
The Sheriff’s office urges drivers to drive safely, for their own sake and the sake of others.
