Teton County Offers Temporary Camping to Aid Commuters During Teton Pass Closure

June 12, 2024 by Jackson Hole Radio

Teton County has taken a practical step to mitigate the impact of the ongoing Teton Pass closure by permitting the use of temporary shelters. This measure, unanimously approved by the Teton County Board of County Commissioners, is designed to assist commuters who are currently unable to travel from their homes due to the road closure.

Under the Emergency Declaration, temporary shelters can be set up in all zones within the unincorporated areas of the county. The types of temporary accommodations allowed include RVs, campers, trailers, motorhomes, tents, yurts, and tepees, which are typically not permitted under normal zoning regulations due to compliance issues with certain building codes.

Residents who are interested in providing spaces on their property for these camping shelters need to follow a simplified process established by the Teton County Planning and Building Services Department. This includes submitting a specific form, which is available on the Teton County website. The temporary shelter allowance will remain in effect until the Emergency Declaration is revoked at the conclusion of the emergency.

This initiative is part of the county’s efforts to provide effective solutions to those affected by the pass closure, ensuring that commuters have options to reduce the disruption to their daily routines. For more detailed information on the regulation and the process, interested parties can visit Teton University’s official website or directly contact the Teton County Planning and Building Services Department.
