Soon, it might take longer to get certain permits from the Teton County planning and building departments.
Given staffing shortages combined with a large number of applications, mandated deadlines for permit review are being missed.
Environmental Analyses, Grading Permits, Sign Permits, Basic Use Permits, and Zoning Compliance Verifications would have deadlines extended to 60 days from the current 30 or 45-day periods.
The department currently has three full-time planners, out of the four approved full-time positions. In the past the County has had as many as five planners.
County officials say that hiring more staff, contacting for outside services, or streamline some processes would help in meeting shorter deadlines.
Like many other agencies, hiring new employees has been unsuccessful and the County is pursuing proposals to utilize outside contractors for some plan review.
In the meantime, the Board of County Commissioners will take up the department’s request next week.
The Teton County Planning Commission has recommended approval.
