The Teton County Board of County Commissioners passed a resolution on February 18th to create the Teton County Semiquincentennial Committee, preparing for the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026. This milestone, marking July 4th, 1776, when the United States declared its independence, will be a chance to reflect on national history and Teton County’s role in it. The committee aims to organize events, educational programs, and celebrations to honor this occasion.
The resolution outlines the committee’s purpose: planning and coordinating activities across Teton County for the 2026 anniversary. The committee will consist of Carrie Geraci from Jackson Hole Public Art, Morgan Albertson Jaouen from History Jackson Hole, Brittany Magleby from Jackson Hole Travel and Tourism, Natalia D. Macker from the Teton County Board of County Commissioners, Maureen E. Murphy, Teton County Treasurer, and Alyon Spery from the Town of Jackson Town Council. These members, appointed by the board, represent a mix of community organizations, historical groups, tourism, and local government to ensure broad participation. The committee’s tasks include scheduling events, working with local, state, and federal partners, and promoting educational efforts about American and local history. It will also seek grants and sponsorships to fund activities and keep them accessible to the community.
Additional responsibilities involve providing updates to the board and suggesting ways to enhance the county’s celebration. The resolution emphasizes the importance of recognizing the sacrifices of past generations and celebrating shared values. The board encourages all Teton County residents, businesses, and organizations to take part in the semiquincentennial events, highlighting themes of freedom, unity, and progress tied to the nation’s 250-year history.
