Teton County School District To Hold Mascot Meeting

The Teton County School District 401 board of education has set another working meeting for Monday, Aug. 19th to consider a plan for the first day of school to address the board’s decision to retire the Redskins mascot name and the reception of that decision by the students. The board held a special meeting Tuesday to further consider how to move forward with their decision and was met with two hours of contention from a clearly split audience of residents. The board was also presented with a petition to have the board reverse their decision. Among the decisions remaining to be made are whether to retire the mascot name in one year, or possibly over a period of four years. Superintendent Monte Woolstenhulm explained that the school administrators are still on summer break and not expected back at their schools until after August 14th. They will be asked for their recommendations for supporting the students during the process in a way that will assure a positive and safe school year. The board’s August 19thmeeting will again be held in Driggs Elementary School, at which time, recommendations for addressing the issue on the first day of school will be examined. Woolstenhulm stresses that at this time, no decisions have been made.
