Teton County marked a significant milestone last week with the completion and opening of the new Swinging Bridge. The event was celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony and swing dancing, paying homage to the bridge’s unique name and recognizing the collaborative efforts behind this project.
The newly constructed bridge now boasts two vehicle lanes and a dedicated pedestrian pathway, enhancing both safety and accessibility. The project, which was funded by the Federal Bridge Replacement Off-System Program via the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT), not only finished six months ahead of schedule but also came in $500,000 under budget.
Collaboration was key in this endeavor. Teton County worked closely with Bridger-Teton National Forest, the landowner on the east side of the river, and WYDOT, which handled the planning, engineering, management, and daily construction inspections. The total cost of the project was $10 million, with WYDOT covering 90% and Teton County contributing the remaining 10%.
Special thanks were extended to the contractors, Reiman Corp. and Westwood Curtis, for their efficient work that minimized disruptions to river users.
The old Swinging Bridge, a single-lane structure from 1960 (with the original built in 1938), has now been replaced. Current plans are in motion to potentially repurpose the trusses from the former bridge.
