Teton County Urges Flood Safety and Preparedness for Spring 2025 in Jackson

April 9, 2025 by Jackson Hole Radio

Flood Safety

Teton County Emergency Management issued flood safety guidance on April 9, 2025, in Jackson, Wyoming, highlighting the region’s history of damaging floods, including seasonal flooding, flash floods, ice jam flooding, and the 1927 Kelly flood following a natural dam failure. Past events, like the 2007 Jensen Canyon flash flood and 2008 Fish Creek Road flooding, underscore the ongoing risk.

With valley snowpack gone, the focus shifts to mid- to high-elevation snowmelt, which can cause stream and riverine flooding, especially with rain-on-snow events, high water tables, and soil saturation. Flooding from irrigation ditches or dams adds unpredictability. Residents are urged to avoid floodwaters—six inches can knock over an adult, and two feet can sweep away vehicles—stay clear of downed power lines, seek higher ground, and protect property with flood insurance and sandbags. Sandbags are available in limited numbers from the County.

Coordinator Rich Ochs emphasized preparation, noting resources like the Teton County Flood Planning App, National Weather Service safety tips, and Ready.gov. Contact Emergency Management at 307-733-9572 for more information.
