Teton County Health Department Director Jodie Pond reported Friday that in the past two weeks, the county has seen 122 new cases of COVID-19 in the population. That, she says, is 20% of all the cases seen in the county since the pandemic began in March – and she calls the trend “unsustainable.” Pond says there are two demographics that stand out as leading the latest trend.
“Our 15 to 19-year-old population is overrepresented in the last two weeks, and our over 75 is overrepresented. These are attributable to high school aged students; and then what’s going on in the Living Center,” Pond said.
School Superintendent Gillian Chapman reported, however that the high school aged students are not contracting the virus at school. In her report, Pond said that the virus is being spread between people who know each other – either within their own households or between friends. The health department is strongly recommending that people limit contact with each other and faithfully wear face coverings; and to limit their trips to the store and post office as well as limit their travel to only what is necessary.
