Teton Valley News reports that several students at Teton High School walked out of class Monday afternoon to call attention to their support for retaining the school’s embattled mascot, the Redskins.
According to the paper, several students stood outside the school doors holding signs expressing pride in the mascot that has been in place at the school since the 1920s. Since they are expressing pride in the image, the students maintained it was not in their minds derogatory.
The question of the appropriateness of the mascot was raised by a parent during the March 11thschool board meetingduring the public comment period, and the board agreed to formally discuss the question in July.
The question was extensively discussed five years ago but never resolved. The students told the paper that their parents were opposed to making a change but couldn’t organize a walk-out themselves, so the students took the initiative. The school board plans to consider the mascot issue at their July 8thmeeting.
