Plans remain in place to provide a pot luck luncheon in the Jackson Town Council Chambers for local federal workers, federal contract workers and their families who were impacted for over a month by the government shutdown. As planned, the Town of Jackson is serving the lunch between 11:30 am and 1:00 pm, but town spokesman Carl Pelletier says now that the employees are back to work, town staffers and members of the Grand Teton Association will take box lunches up to Grand Teton National Park where it may be more difficult for employees to get away to attend the luncheon. Said Pelletier, “I sure that people who are coming back after several weeks off are pretty busy with work, so this is one way that we can help them not think about lunch for a day: they can just come by. I know that the folks at the Elk Refuge as well as Bridger Teton National Forest have their headquarters here in town and can swing by; but we are boxing up some lunches and bringing them out to Grand Teton National Park for the folks that are a little farther away.” Additionally, Pelletier points out that even though the shutdown has been lifted, checks to cover the two missed pay periods will not be available for a few days causing the hardship for many to linger. He says the town recognizes that many talented people in our community who dedicate their professional lives to protecting, promoting, managing, and preserving our public lands and resources, may be experiencing residual hardship due to the shutdown. He says “A big portion of this is just supporting them as a community here – it’s neighbor helping neighbor. That’s the great thing about living in a small town, that we can do things that can help neighbors, even a small gesture like providing a lunch. This is one way that we can help out.” Pelletier goes on, “These men and women are valued members of our community, and we would like to offer this gesture of appreciation.”
