Trench Collapse Kills Two Men

The Teton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a trench collapse with a victim at 120 South Indian Springs Drive yesterday, after receiving notification from dispatch at approximately 3:03pm.
EMS personnel were first on the scene at approximately 3:13pm, and found one individual deceased. In the process of recovering the first deceased victim, an additional victim was found deceased.
In addition to the Teton County Sheriff’s Office, responding agencies included Jackson Hole Fire/EMS, Town of Jackson Public Works, the Jackson Police Department, and the Teton County Coroner’s office. Jackson Hole Fire/EMS Chief, Brady Hansen, served as incident commander.
The victims have been identified as Juan Baez-Sanchez and Victoriano Garcia-Perez. Initial investigation indicates the most likely cause of death to be suffocation. No additional information regarding the victims is available at this time.
“This was a very tragic accident, and we extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims,” said Teton County Undersheriff, Matt Carr.
Mr. Baez-Sanchez and Mr. Garcia-Perez are believed to have been working in the trench, which was approximately 12 to 15 feet deep prior to collapsing. The Incident Command team was responsible for recovering the bodies of the deceased and the safety of responders working in the trench. The last responding units left the scene at approximately 11:16pm after ensuring there were no additional victims.
