Montana state officials have been inundated with calls and emails from people irate over the recent killing of a Yellowstone National Park wolf in Montana. Technically, officials say the wolf was legally shot outside the park near Silver Gate, Montana. The wolf was quite familiar to wolf-watchers and visitors to the park. The Billings Gazette reports that Montana allows limited wolf hunting in the area near Silver Gate, and wolves regularly wander in and out of the park in search of prey. The paper reports that Wildlife advocates would like to see a perimeter established on state lands that surround the park where wolves are protected from hunting and have started a petition seeking such protection.
