The US Travel Association yesterday hosted a conference call to discuss the recovery of the industry once the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted nationally. Association President and CEO Roger Dow pointed out that industry businesses have suffered a disproportional impact to business as a result of the national shutdown. Specifically, he pointed out that about 8-million jobs in the travel industry have been lost during the last two months which is about 1/3 of all the jobs lost nationally. Dow says as the nation moves toward efforts to return to normal, the association has submitted its proposed guidelines for recovery to the White House.
Dow said, “After September 11th, we had the mantra, ‘Without security, there can be no travel.’ Covid-19 crisis has evolved into, ‘Without guidance on the safeguards on the health and safety of travelers, there will be no travel – no sustained reopening of our businesses, and no revival of the US economy.’ “
Dow says the guidelines being put forth by the industry have two primary goals. First is to demonstrate leadership and consistency across the industry to the federal, state and local elected officials, and the public health authorities who will decide when, how and under what conditions travel will reopen again in America. Second, he says is to instill public confidence that they can travel safely once again. Those goals he says were put together with input from all sectors of the travel industry.
