It appears the effects of coronavirus will be felt by international tourism to Wyoming. Travel officials predict tourists to the US from China will be greatly curtailed by travel bans, and at least one local travel promoter is being quoted as saying the familiar bus tours through Jackson Hole to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks are 100% suspended. On the other hand, Rick Howe of the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce says, while increased health concerns and related restrictions will certainly have an effect on this year’s tourism, it should also be noted that we will pick up a certain amount yet to be determined of the cruise market. Travel trends are showing a number those who would have selected cruise vacations will look instead to alternate vacation plans because of the virus concerns. The iconic national parks are a particular draw for that market, especially when it involves family travel. Howe says while we have been seeing the Chinese market coming through our area, an increasing sector of travelers is the family-oriented traveler. Howe assures this trend should provide a balance to help fill in a portion of this summer’s possible gaps. Meanwhile, Howe points out that Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce does not market summer tourism, but only assists people looking for information, and directing them to activities, dining and lodging.
