Wyoming is set to deploy nearly $50 million in state-backed grants to support wildfire restoration efforts, with funding announcements expected in mid-May 2025, according to an April 24, 2025, announcement from Cheyenne. Authorized under Senate Enrolled Act 62, the $49,479,564 allocated to the Wyoming Wildlife Natural Resources Trust (WWNRT) will fund grants for conservation districts, weed and pest districts, and the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission. These grants will focus on habitat restoration on state and private lands, targeting the prevention of invasive grasses like cheatgrass and the recovery of resilient grasslands and rangelands damaged by wildfires. No funds will be used for equipment or structures.
Governor Mark Gordon, who prioritized the initiative during the 68th Legislature, emphasized the critical role of Wyoming’s landscapes in the state’s economy and the need for swift, collaborative recovery efforts with private landowners. The WWNRT began soliciting applications in mid-March, holding regional meetings in Wheatland, Gillette, and Buffalo to discuss proposals with stakeholders, including state agencies and legislators. Bob Budd, WWNRT director, stressed the urgency of acting quickly to prevent habitat loss and protect economic drivers like agriculture and tourism. A multi-agency committee will review applications in the coming weeks to finalize awards. Additionally, Senate Enrolled Act 62 provides $100 million in loans through the State Loans and Investment Board for habitat restoration, fencing, irrigation, and other infrastructure damaged by wildfires and natural disasters.
