Itchy and sore eyes have become commonplace in northwest Wyoming owing to the heavy smoke pouring into the area from the massive west-coast fires. A University of Wyoming Medicine ophthalmologist and cornea specialist is providing some advice of how best to achieve relief. Dr. Michele Lee says the best thing we can all do to protect our eyes is to stay indoors while running a humidifier and an air filter. For those who are experiencing eye irritation, Lee recommends using artificial tears. If you need them just once or twice a day, then she says you can use the tears in a bottle, but she said don’t use Visine because it makes things worse. For those who need artificial tears more than four times a day, Lee suggests using preservative-free tears such as Refresh, which can cost upwards to about $17 to $20. Dr. Lee also says refrigerated eye drops can help calm the eye inflammation even more. Dr. Lee explains the smoke makes the air drier and the tiny particles flying around can irritate and inflame the eyes.
