After recent encounters with Grizzly 399 and her brood inside Jackson’s city limits, officials with the Town are proposing changes to local rules to reduce potential human-wildlife conflicts.
The new town-wide rules would outlaw the of feeding for all wildlife, intentionally or unintentionally though
birdfeeders would still be allowed but must be out of reach to wildlife other than birds and the area below the feeders must be kept free of seeds.
Compost and animal feed would be required to be stored in bear-resistant containers or enclosures.
No new ornamental fruit-bearing trees such as crabapple and cherry trees could be planted and existing ornamental fruit trees would be required to be managed by harvesting, pruning, or fencing.
The Town will also designate three Bear Conflict Zones around Hidden Ranch Subdivision, Karns Hillside, and Nelson Drive.
In the zones, trash will be required to be stored in certified bear-resistant containers or bear-resistant enclosures.
The Town Council is being asked to approve the new measures tonight.
