Winter Recreation Opens in Grand Teton National Park

December 19, 2024 by Jackson Hole Radio

This Friday, December 20, marks the start of winter recreation on Teton Park Road, Moose-Wilson Road, and Signal Mountain Summit Road in Grand Teton National Park. This opens up opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and walking amidst the park’s stunning winter scenery.

Road Grooming and Accessibility:

  • Teton Park Road will be groomed from Taggart Lake parking to Signal Mountain Lodge, starting December 20 and continuing through mid-March, conditions permitting. Grooming occurs three times weekly on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The road features three lanes north of Cottonwood Creek Pullout for about a mile, then narrows to two lanes.
  • Parking is available at key locations: Taggart Lake Trailhead, Cottonwood Creek Picnic Area, and near Signal Mountain Lodge.

Rules and Regulations:

  • No Wheeled Vehicles: Including fat tire and electric bikes, are prohibited on roads designated for winter activities. Bikes are only permitted on roads open to motor vehicles.
  • Dog Policy: Dogs are allowed but must be leashed at all times for safety. They are not permitted in the backcountry, and dog sledding or skijoring is not allowed within the park.

Additional Winter Activities:

  • Snowshoe with a Ranger: Programs on Tuesdays and Fridays from January 7 to March 14, 2025. Reservations at 307-739-3399.
  • Backcountry Camping: Permits are available 24 hours in advance. Contact the park’s permit office or dispatch center for weekend reservations.
  • Colter Bay Winter Activities: Include primitive camping, skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing on Jackson Lake. A $5 nightly fee for camping at the Visitor Center parking lot.

Safety and Wildlife Considerations:

  • Always check the avalanche forecast from the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center before venturing into the backcountry.
  • Respect wildlife by observing closures, especially in bighorn sheep winter zones, and maintain a safe distance from all animals.

Planning Your Visit:

  • Winter in Grand Teton has limited services, so plan ahead, check conditions, and be prepared with food, water, and warm clothing.
