The winter season begins in Yellowstone National Park today, and most park roads will open to over-snow vehicles. Due to the limited snow, travel will be restricted to snow coaches only until conditions improve.
Annually from mid-December until mid-March, visitors can travel most of the park’s roads by commercially guided snowmobiles and snow coaches, and via the non-commercially guided snowmobile program under normal circumstances. Most facilities are closed during winter.
Visitors can check winter operating hours for visitor centers, stores, restaurants, campgrounds, lodges and warming huts online, and should fill up on fuel and pack extra food and water. Winter travel ends in mid-March when plowing crews begin to clear a winter’s worth of snow.
Roads will start to re-open to automobiles in mid-April.
