The controversial wolf harvest in Montana’s Fish Wildlife and Parks Region 3 near Yellowstone National Park is approaching the threshold of 82 wolves, which will trigger the end of the wolf trapping and hunting season in that region.
The current harvest total is 80 wolves. Last month, Montana’s Fish and Wildlife Commission voted to close wolf hunting and trapping in region 3 upon meeting the threshold of 82 wolves there. The move came in response to mounting criticism over a record number of the animals shot or trapped after roaming out of the park this winter. In total, 23 wolves specifically from Yellowstone have been killed this winter after wandering from the park into Montana, Idaho and Wyoming.
Most were killed in Montana. The closure of region 3 will go into effect immediately after Fish Wildlife and Parks announces the harvest of the 82nd wolf in that region.
