Wolves, believed to be from the Huckleberry Pack, have been more visible near Jackson this winter, primarily at the National Elk Refuge on the northern edge of town. Observers have said there appear to be at least 12 wolves in the pack, although they are often not all seen together at one time. Game and Fish Spokesman Mark Gocke, says it is most likely that the pack followed the elk as they came south out of the park. Previously, a smaller pack known as the Pinnacle Pack had frequented the refuge, but Gocke says it appears the larger Huckleberry Park has edged them out. Gocke says they will likely stick to the refuge until the elk begin migrating off the reserve in the weeks ahead. In spite of being so close to town, Gocke says the canids generally avoid people, although in his words, “they can be pretty nonchalant at times,” but don’t pose any threat to the public.
