Wyo Needs Improvement On Internet Safety

The state of Wyoming needs significant improvement in the way it protects its young people from entering inappropriate sites online. SafeWise, which is a nationally recognized safety and security brand, ranked the nation’s states for their internet safety measures and Wyoming ranked at the bottom with Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin. SafeWisepoints out that while there are amazing opportunities to use the internet for learning and enrichment, they say it also possesses the ability to expose children to real-life dangers. For this reason, SafeWise advocates that we equip younger generations with the knowledge necessary to navigate safely. Threats to children online run the gamut from cyberbullying to online predators or simply inappropriate and graphic content. SafeWise looked at state laws for both sexting and cyberbullying. Points were assigned to states based on the types of laws currently on the books and the consequences for violating those laws. School policies and consequences were also factors.
