A small mammal that was once thought to be extinct has had quite the comeback in the Cowboy State.
The recovery of the black-footed ferret has been a project for the Wyoming Game and Fish Department for 41 years.
That’s how long ago the animal was rediscovered in the state.
In order to bolster the mammals’ population this week, eighteen black-footed ferrets were released last week on the historic recovery site near Meeteetse. Twelve male and six female captive-born ferrets let loose on private land owned by The Lazy BV and Pitchfork ranches.
Game and Fish works to maintain at least 35 individuals at the Meeteetse recovery site, a baseline set by the USFWS.
