The Wyoming Game and Fish Department reminds residents that authorization is required before collecting road-killed wildlife. The Wyoming 511 app allows the public to request permission to salvage certain species, including deer, elk, antelope, moose, wild bison, and wild turkey, following unintentional vehicle collisions.
How to Obtain Authorization
Requests for collection can be submitted via the “Report Roadkill” button on the Wyoming 511 app. Even without cellular service, users can complete the process and receive a certificate of authorization after answering a questionnaire. A username and password with Game and Fish are required to access this feature.
Safety and Regulatory Guidelines
Authorized individuals must follow specific safety regulations when collecting roadkill:
- Collection is only allowed from sunrise to sunset.
- Vehicles must be parked off the road with emergency flashers activated.
- Field dressing is prohibited on roadways.
- The entire animal must be removed, and inedible parts must be disposed of at an approved landfill.
Collections are not permitted in the following areas:
- Extremely busy highways, such as Interstates 25, 80, and 90.
- Active construction zones.
- National parks within Wyoming.
