The Wyoming Game and Fish Department, in coordination with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, captured and relocated an adult male grizzly bear on May 16, 2025, due to cattle depredation on private land. The bear was moved to the Glade Creek drainage, approximately 2.5 miles south of Yellowstone National Park, in accordance with state and federal regulations. Game and Fish is required to notify the public of all grizzly bear relocations to maintain transparency in wildlife management efforts.
Relocation is a key strategy used by large carnivore biologists to reduce human-bear conflicts when deterrents or preventive measures are ineffective. Bears posing a direct threat to human safety are not relocated, and removal from the population may occur if relocation is not feasible. Decisions consider the bear’s age, sex, conflict type, and nearby human activity, with sites chosen within or near the grizzly bear recovery zone to optimize survival and minimize future conflicts. Game and Fish urges the public to secure attractants like food, garbage, horse feed, and bird seed to prevent bear encounters, reducing the need for relocations.
