Reactions to the death of a young Marine from the Teton County/Sublette County area continue to pour in. Rylee McCollum entered the Marines right after graduating from Teton County School District’s Summit Innovations High School in 2019 and moving to Bondurant with his new wife.
Jackson Mayor Hailey Morton Levinson said, “My heart breaks hearing of the loss of one of our community members, US Marine Rylee McCollum. My love and prayers are with his family and friends during this tragic time and know that no words can be the comfort needed in such times. The community of Jackson is here for Rylee’s family and friends and will continue to be however they may need.”
Teton County Commission Chairwoman Natalia D. Macker said, “I am deeply saddened to learn that a young man who grew up in our community was one of the 13 U.S. Service Members who tragically lost their life in last week’s terrorist attack in Afghanistan. I am heartbroken for his family and friends, and our whole community sends them love. Teton County will honor and remember Rylee and his selfless service. His courage, bravery, and sacrifice are an example for us all.”
Senator John Barrasso wrote, “Rylee was a true American hero. We will always be grateful for his service and send our condolences to the entire McCollum family.” Senator Cynthia Lummis added, “There are no words sufficient to comfort a family after hearing news like this, but I want to express my deepest condolences to Rylee McCollum’s family and friends. I am praying that the peace of the Lord encompasses them during this horrible time.”
Congresswoman Liz Cheney also reacted: “His willingness to put himself in harm’s way to keep our country safe and defend our freedom represents a level of selflessness and heroism that embodies the best of America.”
Sublette County Sheriff’s Office wrote on their facebook page, “During this difficult time we also extend our combined sadness for the unnecessary loss to the friends and family of Marine McCollum, he truely was a hero. We are deeply devastated to learn that among the victims was one of Sublette Counties very own.”
McCollum was also honored prior to Friday night’s Jackson Hole High School football game.
