Senators John Barrasso and Mike Enzi have signed a bipartisan letter addressed to the US House of Representatives urging congressional leadership to provide a meaningful solution for the H-2B temporary guest worker program. The objective is to provide an appropriate amount of non-immigrant, temporary workers needed to supplement the American workforce – particularly as it applies to the needs of seasonal business. The letter states that the current statutory cap of 66-thousand workers set more than three decades ago is inadequate to meet that need. As a result, the letter says employers are simply unable to attain sufficient workers to meet their labor demands. The letter warns that if significant and permanent relief is not provided, there will be severe consequences for seasonal businesses, and the nation’s economy in general. For the past few summers, business in Jackson struggled with having insufficient summer employees abailable. Altogether, the letter is signed by 127 Senators and Congressmen.
