In the 2023 Wyoming Gray Wolf Monitoring and Management annual report, recently released by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department alongside partnering agencies, Officials say that they have had continued success in the state’s management of its gray wolf population. According to the report this year marks the 22nd consecutive year that Wyoming has maintained wolf numbers above the recovery criteria set forth for the species.
Key Highlights from the 2023 Report:
- Population Growth: As of December 31, 2023, Wyoming reports at least 192 wolves and 17 breeding pairs within the designated wolf trophy game management area.And the state’s total count is at least 352 wolves spread across 43 packs, with 24 confirmed breeding pairs.
- Decreased Livestock Depredation: A significant decrease in livestock conflicts was noted, with 2023 recording the lowest number of verified livestock depredations since 2010.
Brian Nesvik, Director of the Game and Fish Department, commented on the report, stating, “Wyoming has a proven track record of successfully managing our gray wolf population, and we will continue that approach into the future.” He emphasized the importance of the department’s monitoring program in providing valuable insights into the population dynamics of wolves, which plays a critical role in the conservation and management of the species.
