Yellowstone National Park is to open the south loop of the park today on an odd-even admission system. Yellowstone Superintendent Cam Sholly told reporters yesterday that there are concerns that park visitors will not honor the odd-even system when they seek admission to the park. Under the temporary system, those with even-numbered license plates would be admitted on even days, and those with odd numbers on odd days. But Sholly says those traveling together might seek an exception.
“A family of 10 that’s got two houses that they’ve rented in West Yellowstone and they’re traveling together, and… The problem with that is a slippery slope. Number one, it defeats the purpose ultimately. If we start granting all of these exceptions, it becomes impossible to enforce at the gate for the employees, and it defeats the purpose for what we’re trying to do.”
Sholly says there is also confusion about what on the northern end may open and what won’t. Work continues to make the Old Gardiner Road between Mammoth and Gardiner passable, but completion of that is still a ways out, and the East Entrance from Roosevelt/Tower to Cook City has no alternatives to pursue to open a route there anytime soon.
