Fort Peck Assiniboine & Sioux Tribes officials have reached with the United States Department of Agriculture that would allow the transport of five bull bison from the Yellowstone ecosystem to the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. These bison have been tested multiple times and at this time they are considered brucellosis-free making them eligible for relocation from the containment facility north of Yellowstone, according to Montana State Veterinarian Marty Zaluski. The bull bison, along with dozens more, have been in a years-long quarantine process as part of an effort to ship the animals to native communities rather than slaughtering them. Yellowstone Superintendent Cam Sholly praised APHIS, the tribes at Fort Peck, and the state of Montana for finalizing the agreement and for moving bison from Corwin Springs to Fort Peck, which he says helps pave the way for future transfers of brucellosis-free bison from Yellowstone to the park’s tribal partners.
