Yellowstone National Park has announced that theparkwide fire danger level has been reduced moderate. While the danger had elevated to where implementation of restrictions had been considered, they never were. However, campfires are only permitted within established fire rings in campgrounds and some backcountry campsites. Park fire managers emphasize that all campfires must be cold to the touch before abandoning them. Before leaving camp or a picnic site, soak and stir the fire, feel to assure it is cold to the touch, and if not repeat. At this time, there are several fires burning in the back country as managed fires. Park officials explain that the Greater Yellowstone area is a fire-adapted ecosystem. Fire plays an important role in maintaining the health of this area’s wildlife habitat and vegetation.
