Yellowstone National Park has implemented fishing closures on several rivers starting July 12th, 2025, to protect its native and wild trout fisheries from warm water temperatures and low river flows. The closures, announced by park officials, affect the Madison River, Firehole River, Gibbon River (downstream of Norris Campground), and all their associated tributaries. These measures will remain in place until cooler water temperatures and higher flows return, with ongoing monitoring to assess conditions.
The park’s decision follows recent water temperatures exceeding 68°F (20°C) and significantly reduced stream flows, conditions that can stress and potentially kill fish. The extended weather forecast predicts continued hot, dry weather with only a slight chance of isolated afternoon thunderstorms, which are unlikely to improve stream conditions. Additional closures or restrictions may be enacted if necessary.Fishing remains permitted on Yellowstone Lake and other lakes from sunrise to sunset, as outlined in the 2025 Fishing Regulations booklet, as well as on rivers and streams not listed in the closure.
Anglers are urged to fish during cooler parts of the day, land fish quickly, avoid exhausting hooked trout, and handle fish gently in the water to ensure their recovery before release. These practices help safeguard the park’s fisheries during challenging environmental conditions. For updates on closures or to review fishing regulations, visit the Yellowstone National Park website or contact park staff. Anglers’ cooperation is vital to preserving the park’s aquatic ecosystems.
