Yellowstone National Park confirmed its first wildland fire of 2025 on May 26, when hikers reported the Memorial Day Fire on the Bighorn Pass Trail. Located 0.75 miles southeast of the Bighorn Pass Trailhead off U.S. Highway 191 in the park’s northwest corner, the 0.1-acre fire was burning in a mixed conifer forest. Yellowstone wildland firefighters responded promptly, suppressing the creeping ground fire, and it is now controlled. The parkwide fire danger level remains low, with no fire restrictions currently in place or planned, according to park officials.
Campfires are permitted only in established fire rings at campgrounds and select backcountry sites, and must be attended and cold to the touch before being left. The Greater Yellowstone area, a fire-adapted ecosystem, relies on fire to maintain healthy wildlife habitats and vegetation.
