Yellowstone National Park will kick off its post-winter season on April 18, 2025, with the opening of select entrances and roads, weather permitting. Starting at 8 a.m., visitors can enter through the North Entrance in Gardiner, Montana, and the West Entrance in West Yellowstone, Montana. These gateways provide access to several iconic destinations within the park, including Mammoth Hot Springs, Lamar Valley, Norris Geyser Basin, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Old Faithful, and the communities of Silver Gate and Cooke City, Montana.
Additional park roads are scheduled to open throughout May, depending on weather conditions. Visitors planning a trip should be prepared for spring challenges, such as snow-covered trails and boardwalks, and pack appropriate clothing and footwear. Park officials note that road closures or temporary restrictions may occur without notice due to inclement weather or ongoing road improvement projects, which could cause delays of up to 30 minutes. To stay informed, travelers can check road conditions or sign up for text alerts. On April 19, the park will waive entrance fees in celebration of National Park Week, offering a budget-friendly opportunity to explore.
Wildlife safety remains a priority during visits. Bison, elk, bears, and other animals often use roads as travel paths, and snowbanks can limit their ability to move aside. Park officials advise maintaining a distance of at least 100 yards from bears and wolves and 25 yards from other wildlife to ensure safety for both visitors and animals. Carrying bear spray and staying alert are recommended precautions.
