Yellowstone set to shatter visitor numbers

June 11, 2021 by Jackson Hole Radio

Despite a decline of about ¼-million visitors between 2017 and 2020 in Yellowstone National Park, Superintendent Cam Sholly says the park is already on the way to shattering all previous records.
He said, “I believe it’s very possible we’ll hit 4.7 to 5 million visitors this year in this park.”
Sholly says as Yellowstone visitation continues to grow, so should the park’s efforts to efficiently move the visitors around the park. To that end, he hopes a fleet of driverless electric vehicles that was inaugurated this week on the northern end of the park will provide convenient transportation. Sholly says he is optimistic this will help relieve some of the congestion.
“A lot of people will come to this location and park their car, and then if an efficient shuttle system is in place, it can get them where they want to go reliably and predictably, they’ll use it.
Sholly says obviously the number of shuttles being used this year will not move a lot of people, but the point of the pilot program is to test the technology and see if it will work to serve the people.
