The University of Utah Seismograph Stations, responsible for the operation and analysis of the Yellowstone Seismic Network, tracked 254 earthquakes in the Yellowstone National Park region during March.
The seismicity in Yellowstone was marked by two swarms: A swarm of 115 earthquakes, about 11 miles northeast of West Yellowstone, began on March 28th and continued through the end of the month, with about 100 tremors occurring within just one day.
Another swarm of 38 earthquakes, about 11 miles south-southeast of West Thumb in Yellowstone National Park. occurred March 2nd through March 8th.
Yellowstone Volcano Observatory Scientist-in-Charge Mike Poland points out that seismic swarms are nothing new in Yellowstone and typically have dozens of swarms there every year.
In fact, says Poland, “There’s typically 2000 earthquakes or so on average every year.” Poland says the area where the swarms occurred is the most seismically active area of the park and don’t really have anything to do with the volcanic activity of the park.
