Even though love is in the air for elk in Yellowstone National Park, rangers will tell you one thing is for sure: bull elk in Yellowstone National Park can be unpredictable and dangerous during fall mating season which is underway.
The elk rut, as the mating season is known, has begun in Yellowstone National Park and in areas where people and elk can mingle like Mammoth Hot Springs, visitors must stay alert. Elk are fast and can charge and change directions quickly and without warning.
The Park says that tourists have been severely injured by elk. Elk run quickly and may change direction
Always maintain a distance of at least 25 yards and never approach or pursue animals to take their picture.
If an elk charges you:
Quickly find shelter in your vehicle or behind a tall, sturdy barrier.
Run away if nearby shelter is not available.
Follow directions from park rangers.
Remember, you are responsible for your own safety.
