Sportsmen Seek To Stop More Oil Leases

Dozens of sportsmen’s groups have signed onto a letter requesting the Forest Service use their authority to withdraw 35 parcels covering more than 44 thousand acres of oil and gas leases in the Wyoming Range. This letter comes on the heels of a more than a $8 million buyout of leases from Plains Energy and Exploration Company by the Trust for Public Lands last year. The letter, signed by 28 sporting groups, was sent Tuesday to Intermountain Region Regional Forester Nora Rasure as part of an effort to conserve and protect critical wildlife habitat and a prominent backcountry recreational site from oil and gas development. Steven Brutger, Wyoming energy coordinator for Trout Unlimited said the 44 thousand acres are the same area that resulted in the creation of the Wyoming Range Legacy Act of 2008, but he adds they remain in limbo today.
