Broncs take win streak on the road

September 15, 2022 by Jackson Hole Radio

Jackson has answered some early questions three weeks into the 2022 season. They can score. They can play defense. And they are for real.
Ranked #3 among 3A schools in Wyoming by MaxPreps, and in a 3-way tie for 2nd in conference standings, the Broncs take their act on the road Friday to tangle with yet another Idaho team (3 out of 4 games to start the season have been against Gem State opponents). Jackson has not yet won on the road after following a Week 0 loss to Teton with two straight home wins.
Jackson 55, Wood River 12
Last Friday, the Broncs offense busted out with a season-high 55 points against an overmatched Wood River (0-4) squad out of Hailey, Idaho. Coach David White again went early and often to his bread-and-butter quick slant and the Wolverines had no answer.
With the Broncs up 3-0 early after a slant to Thomas May went to the 2-yard line and stalled, Jackson turned a fumble recovery into another quick score when QB Owen Janssen found WR Xander Witt in the back of the endzone after both players extended the play—Witt breaking off his intended route to help his quarterback Janssen who scrambled to his right looking for help. Janssen paid the price to deliver the 16-yard TD pass, taking a big hit as he released the pass.
Jackson kept up the pressure, adding a 35-yard field goal from Braden Hills, a 4-yard TD rush by Jack Jenkins, and a beautiful 50-yard shot to Witt, who has speed to burn on the outside. Even the defense got in on the act when pass rush pressure from Lukas Gralund caused a fumble and Andrew Hanna was there to scoop up the loose change and waltz into the end zone with the score to make it 32-0 at the half.
The Broncs would cruise to a 55-12 win over the Wolverines to improve to 2-1 on the season. Coach White liked what he saw, especially the energy on defense.
“I don’t micromanage the defense. Obviously, I want to make sure we have a sound scheme but, for the most part what I preach to them every day is being relentless, husting to the ball, showing pressures. Letting these kids fly around,” White said. “It’s less to do with X’s and O’s and just preaching a sense of urgency and hustle. I mean, they’re teenagers, you know what I mean?”
