The Headwaters District of the Boy Scouts of America is hosting an event to recognize adult leaders in the community on Friday evening. This year’s event will honor adult leaders and volunteers from 2019 through last year, as the program was interrupted by the COVID pandemic for the last several years.
District Scout leaders have chosen some “Heroes of the Year” One of which is Jackson Hole Radio’s Del Ray John, Del Ray’s voice has been familiar to listeners of KJAX and KSGT over the last many decades.
However, the award recognizes him for being so much more of the Jackson Hole fabric than just a morning radio host.
Aside from his mornings on the radio, Del Ray, who is himself an Eagle Scout, has participated in many community service projects. He worked in community theater productions at the Pink Garter Playhouse and performed on the Jackson Shoot-out Gang on the town square. He served as the narrator for the Community Band children’s concert and provided elements for Eagle Scout courts of honor.
Del Ray was a founding member of the Freedom Birds a group of Vietnam Veterans from Eastern Idaho formed in 1979. This group was directly responsible for the Idaho State Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Idaho Falls, constructed in 1986.
For all his contributions to the communities around him over the years, Headwaters District has selected Del Ray to be honored as a “Hero of the Year.”
