Buckle Up for Safety: Wyoming Law Enforcement Supports National Click It or Ticket Campaign

May 23, 2023 by Scott Anderson

Wyoming law enforcement is joining forces with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in promoting the importance of seat belt usage during the annual Click It or Ticket high-visibility enforcement effort. This nationwide seat belt campaign, coinciding with the Memorial Day holiday, will take place from May 22 to June 4, 2023. Law enforcement agencies in Wyoming are emphasizing the critical role seat belts play in saving lives and urging drivers to prioritize their safety by buckling up.

The Life-Saving Importance of Seat Belt Usage:

Colonel Tim Cameron of the Wyoming Highway Patrol emphasizes that wearing seat belts is not only a legal requirement for motorists in Wyoming but also a crucial life-saving measure. Regardless of age or driving experience, seat belts significantly reduce the risk of severe injury or death in the event of a collision. Colonel Cameron underscores the importance of embracing this safety practice to protect oneself and others on the road.

Unbuckled Fatality Stats

The need for increased seat belt usage is underscored by the statistics from 2021. In Wyoming alone, 43 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants lost their lives in crashes. Alarmingly, the seat belt usage rate in the state dropped to only 80.2%. Nationally, the number of unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in the United States rose to a staggering 11,813 in 2021. These numbers highlight the dire consequences of neglecting to wear seat belts and reinforce the urgency of promoting seat belt compliance.

Zero Tolerance Enforcement

Wyoming law enforcement agencies are committed to taking a no-excuses approach when it comes to enforcing seat belt laws. Officers will be actively writing citations day and night for individuals who fail to buckle up. This firm stance is aimed at raising awareness, reinforcing compliance, and ensuring the safety of all motorists on Wyoming’s roads.

More Information and Resources:

To learn more about the Click It or Ticket mobilization and the importance of seat belt usage, interested individuals can visit the official website of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at www.nhtsa.gov/ciot. The website offers valuable resources, statistics, and educational materials related to seat belt safety.

As Wyoming joins the nationwide Click It or Ticket campaign, law enforcement agencies are urging all drivers and passengers to prioritize their safety by wearing seat belts. The statistics highlighting the consequences of unbuckled fatalities are a stark reminder of the critical role seat belts play in preventing severe injuries and loss of life in accidents. By embracing seat belt usage, individuals can actively contribute to reducing roadway fatalities and ensuring the well-being of themselves and others. Let’s make seat belt compliance a top priority every time we step into a vehicle and make Wyoming’s roads safer for everyone.
