A National Recognition for Locally-Owned Radio Station
Jackson Hole’s original FM radio station, KMTN, popularly known as ‘The Mountain’, has been acclaimed as Station of the Year Markets 75+ category at the recently held Summitfest Triple A Radio Convention in Boulder, Colorado. Mark “Fish” Fishman, the program director and morning personality of KMTN, graciously accepted this recognition on behalf of the station during the conference.
The Adult Album Alternative (AAA) format, features over 100 reporting stations nationwide, with roots in both ’70s classic album stations and ’80s alternative rock. The format features a diverse playlist, including indie rock, Americana, classic rock, alternative genres, jazz, folk, and more. The Markets 75+ bracket encompasses influential cities like Oklahoma City, Mobile, Bend, Boise, and Billings, where nominations and votes reflect the acknowledgment from peers across the radio and record industries.
“Fish” Underscores Localism in Small Market Radio
KMTN, owned by Jackson Hole Radio, LLC and known as ‘The Mountain‘, has been broadcasting at 96.9 FM in Jackson Hole since 1975. It features a unique blend of music and community-oriented content. Fishman, who has been shaping KMTN’s programming since 1996, has been previously recognized with the national Program Director of the Year distinction from in 2016 and 2017. At the conference, Fish said, “It’s our goal to provide Jackson Hole with great music, insightful interviews, and social commentary—all while serving our community each day. We couldn’t be more proud.”

The AAA (Adult Album Alternative) radio format caters to a diverse and discerning audience, typically consisting of adults between the ages of 25 and 64. Summitfest Radio Convention Featured Industry Discussion and Music
The conference gathered radio stations from around the country to discuss industry issues, such as the role of AI in radio and listener engagement. The event also included a keynote Interview featuring musician Lukas Nelson who discussed the impact the AAA format has on the music industry.
The convention also featured a large lineup of performers at Boulder’s Fox Theater and at an outdoor stage.The acts included Lukas Nelson and Grace Potter.

While Mark Fishman accepted the award for KMTN as Station of the Year Markets 75+, numerous other awards were presented at Summitfest. Large market Station of the Year went to WRLT, Lightning 100 in Nashville, while Non-Commercial Station of the Year was given to SoCal Sound 88.5FM in Los Angeles
48 Years of KMTN
- In 1974, Newbold (Captain Bob) Morris envisioned Jackson’s first FM radio station atop Snow King Mountain. His dream took shape on May 28, 1974, when the FCC granted the callsign KMTN to Teewinot Broadcasting
- On January 28, 1975, KMTN was officially licensed by the FCC to operate at 96.9 megahertz, with a radiated power of 55 thousand watts.
- In 2019, KMTN found its way back to local ownership under Jackson Hole Radio, LLC owned by Scott Anderson.
