Heroic Legacy of the 10th Mountain Division
Many Teton County residents are familiar with the Riva Ridge subdivision, but few know its true significance. This hidden gem pays tribute to Phil Lucas, a courageous veteran of the 10th Mountain Division, whose valor helped shape America’s outdoor recreation economy, worth around $1 trillion today. Christian Beckwith’s upcoming presentation sheds light on the history and ties of the 10th Mountain Division to the Teton region.

Background of the 10th Mountain Division
During World War II, the 10th Mountain Division, composed of skilled climbers and skiers, played a pivotal role in ending the war in Europe. With mountaineering experience, these men were perfect candidates to participate in the February 1945 assault on Italy’s Riva Ridge. Phil Lucas, a rancher from Jackson, was among the division’s brave members. Other notable Teton county residents in the division include Paul Petzoldt, the founder of the Petzoldt-Exum School of Mountaineering, and brothers Grant and Tiny Hagen. Their involvement in the assault on Riva Ridge contributed to breaking Hitler’s Gothic Line and the end of WW2.
