Many Teton County residents are familiar with the Riva Ridge subdivision, but few know its true significance. This hidden gem pays tribute to Phil Lucas, a courageous veteran of the 10th Mountain Division, whose valor helped shape America’s outdoor recreation economy, worth around $1 trillion today. Background of the 10th Mountain Division

During World War II, the 10th Mountain Division, composed of skilled climbers and skiers, played a pivotal role in ending the war in Europe. With mountaineering experience, these men were perfect candidates to participate in the February 1945 assault on Italy’s Riva Ridge. Phil Lucas, a rancher from Jackson, was among the division’s brave members. Other notable Teton county residents in the division include Paul Petzoldt, the founder of the Petzoldt-Exum School of Mountaineering, and brothers Grant and Tiny Hagen. Their involvement in the assault on Riva Ridge contributed to breaking Hitler’s Gothic Line and the end of WW2.
