On October 3, Teton County Search & Rescue (TCSAR) from Jackson, Wyoming, assisted in the recovery of a trail runner who had fallen in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, west of Boulder, Colorado. The runner had fallen on August 28 in a remote, rugged area, and several previous attempts to recover the body had failed due to the difficult terrain.
After considering options, TCSAR, along with two Jenny Lake Climbing Rangers from Grand Teton National Park, agreed to help with a short-haul operation. This type of rescue involves lowering rescuers via a rope attached to the helicopter, used when landing is not possible. The Wyoming team departed for Colorado on October 2 after ensuring backup helicopter support was available in Jackson.
On the morning of October 3, the team flew to Arikaree Peak, a steep and rocky mountain, where they successfully located and recovered the body. The operation required using a long line to transport the body and short-hauling the rescuers off the mountain. The team returned to Jackson by the afternoon of October 3.
TCSAR Chief Advisor Cody Lockhart noted the complexity of the mission, both technically and emotionally, stating that it was their first time assisting with a recovery in Colorado. He expressed gratitude for the collaboration between multiple agencies that helped bring the mission to a close and provide closure for the family.
Grand County Sheriff Brett Schroetlin also thanked all the agencies involved, recognizing the efforts of everyone to ensure the safety of responders during the operation.
TCSAR extended its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
