Public Lands Stabilize Western Economies

Abundant public lands are being credited for the strong economies in western states like Wyoming. A report issued yesterday by Headwaters Economics examines job opportunities, income and population changes in Wyoming and other western states against a backdrop of National Forests, parks and other public spaces. Researcher Ben Alexander says most states are seeing their economies diversifying now with strong growth in health care and high-tech, and they found a direct connection to public lands as a recruiting asset. However, Alexander points out that around most of Wyoming, the economies are still largely focused on minerals extraction. Alexander says there are some pockets around Laramie, around Jackson Hole, of course, and around Sheridan, where you do see economies that more diverse, or not entirely dependent on energy resources.  …and while Wyoming is very energy focused, it has enjoyed a success that is enviable, and has also set money aside should times get tough.  Alexander says thanks to the abundant public lands out west, western states have seen their economies fare better than states elsewhere over the past 40 years.

  • Happy Thanksgiving, Wyoming! - November 27, 2014
I know, a show about giving thanks on Thanksgiving is pretty predictable. But it doesn’t feel right to overlook the importance of this day. However, because this is a program about the outdoors, I’ll just talk about the things in the outdoors I’m thankful for. There’s plenty of it. Especially here in Wyoming. We’ve got […]

The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer. It’s the amount of daylight, and not the temperature, that causes wild animals to grow longer, thicker coats. If you’re a predator hunter or a trapper, that’s your cue. The pelts are coming into their prime right now, but that doesn’t mean they’re at […]

The I-25 and I-80 corridors and adjacent roads throughout central, eastern and southern Wyoming will see very strong and gusty winds today.  Sustained winds of 25 to 40 mph likely for many areas with gusts to 60 mph or higher in the wind prone locations. Light to moderate snow shower activity will also be increasing […]
  • Tame that recoil - November 25, 2014
You don’t have to put up with nasty recoil when you’re hunting. Even if you’re hunting our state’s bigger animals, like elk, moose, or even bison, today’s technology can take a lot of the sting out of your hunting rifle. A friend told me he developed a bad flinch while sighting in his .300 Win […]
