Two Groups Demonstrate Sunday For Reopening Yellowstone

YNP Demonstraton

Two groups of demonstrators lined up outside barricaded Yellowstone National Park entrance stations Sunday to voice their displeasure at the closure of the national parks due to the government shutdown.  Park Spokesman Dan Hottle says about 100 gathered outside the park’s East Entrance while another 20 lined up outside the North Entrance at Gardiner, carrying signs and showing support for the park while demanding a solution to the government shutdown.  Hottle says the gatherings were calm, orderly and civil, although the groups did walk 100 yards into the park past the barricades.   Rangers who were on the scenes to monitor the events permitted the walk and issued no citations for the demonstration.  Tina Lyn Estes wrote on the  Facebook page entitled Protest for Yellowstone National Park,  “Employees of local businesses and tourists from as far away as New Hampshire and New York participated and chanted together. The group was friendly and peaceful though quite solemn as the impact on businesses here in Gardiner was extreme.”
