Yellowstone National Park, in collaboration with the Federal Highway Administration, looking to construct a new, permanent North Entrance Road. Aimed at enhancing year-round access between Gardiner, Montana, and Cooke City/Silver Gate, Montana, the project focuses on improving natural hazard resilience and safeguarding the park’s natural and cultural resources. As part of the planning process, Yellowstone is inviting public participation through virtual meetings and a dedicated comment period.
Virtual Public Meetings and Comment Period
To gather feedback from the public, Yellowstone has scheduled two virtual public meetings on February 12 and February 14, 2024. Additionally, a 30-day public comment period will kick off on February 12, offering another avenue for stakeholders to express their views.
A 500-year flood event on June 13, 2022, caused extensive damage to the park’s northern infrastructure. The flood wiped out the road from Mammoth Hot Springs to Gardiner, Montana and park officials raced to convert an old wagon trail into a temporary connection. The proposed road aims to not only restore but improve access.
